Introducing: Your Cleveland TBDs...

For 105 years Cleveland baseball knew their hometown team as the Indians. However as of today there’s information out that indicates that later this week the team will comment on this issue with the plan to drop the name. This should come as no surprise to fans with the Indians’ efforts over the past year as they dropped the cartoon Chief Wahoo and phased it out as being their logo. There is a lot of outrage from fans over the offensiveness towards Native Americans and many teams from the high school level all the way up towards the professional level have begun to phase out their mascots and logos that are seen as derogatory, as we have seen with the Washington Football Team in the NFL. Reports indicate that Cleveland may just remain the same for 2021 and begin to implement the changes in 2022 or they might take a similar approach as The Football Team and use the name the Cleveland Baseball Team for interim until they decide on what they would change the teams brand to.

This is a big step in the right direction and was an inevitable decision. There are still other teams in the MLB and other leagues, such as the Chiefs, Blackhawks and the Braves, that may follow in the steps of Cleveland and Washington. It’s going to be a new era and Cleveland should be interesting to see what they decide on and the reactions from fan bases and around the league.
